Mariato is a small town on the western Azuero, and functions as the capitol of the Mariato District, which was founded on June 25, 2001.

Mariato has a couple of small supermarkets stocking basic food items, drinks and hardware. Also a health center, serving local communities, plus a bank with ATM. There is a gas station at the north end of town, as well as a small road side restaurant, Juilo José, serving delicious simple food popular with expats, visitors and locals alike.
